Murud is at a distance of about 165 kms from Mumbai and is famous for its beaches as well as its proximity to the famous Janjira fort. During earlier times, Murud was also the capital of the state of ‘Janjira’. The place is also famous for being the birthplace of the reputed Bollywood actor ‘Nana Patekar’. It is centrally located for those with a long holiday period to visit other famous tourist circuits such as Diveagar-Srivardhan-Harihareshwar and is also at a short distance from alibag. Duration of stay: A minimum of two day stay is recommended. Things to do: · Murud Beach: It is among the most popular beaches in Maharashtra and stretches to as much as 2 Kms. The beaches are white, clean and unspoilt. A tourist to this area can lounge on the beach in peace with the gentle breeze from the sea providing music to his ears. It is an ideal destination for a weekend getaway/rejuvenation. One can also enjoy activities on the beach like boating, fishing, riding on bullock-carts, etc. · Janjira fort: Janjira is an island fort located on the coastal village of Murud and is situated at a distance of about 5 Kms from Murud. The place is also synonymous as Murud-Janjira and the terms are constantly used interchangeably. The fort is a sight to behold lying at a distance from the mainland. It inspires awe as to the construction abilities in the earlier ages. It is a sight to behold both for its architectural as well as historical importance. It was previously built by the Konkan kings and later on conquered by the siddis and had a reputation of being impregnable. The fort was well protected and even Chhatrapati Shivaji during his period could not conquer the fort from the siddis. · Khokari/Khokri Tombs: Situated at a distance of approximately 2 Kms from Murud, These tombs are believed to be more than 500 years old and contain the tombs of the earlier kings of janjira. The site has a total of 1 large and 2 small tomb. Local tales have it there exists untold secrets of treasures within the tomb but one has to read the ‘Quran’ backwards without repetition or pause to be able to gather the knowledge of the treasure. · Siddhivinayak Temple, Nandgaon: Nandgaon is a small village located at a distance of 8Kms from Murud and is famous for its siddhivinayak temple which is considered to be very holy and is frequented by devotees and tourists from distant places. · Nawab’s Palace, Janjira: The palace was built in the year 1885 and is an imposing sight to behold. It is still owned by the descendants of the Nawab. The palace is surrounded by large tracts of land for as far as the eye can see. The palace is not allowed to be visited by tourists but can be seen from outside of the gates. · Kashid beach: It is a beautiful beach located at about a distance of 22 Kms from Murud and is located on the Murud-Alibag road. The beach stretches for 2 kms and is surrounded by hills on both sides and is a beautiful sight to behold. How to reach: Air: Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai - 165 kms and Pune Airport – 230 Kms. Rail: Roha Rail station – 65 Kms from Murud. Road: Buses are available for nearby cities as well as to Mumbai and Pune. Sea: One can take a bus to mandwa i.e. about 65 Kms from Murud and from there Catarmanan/ferry service is available for Mumbai.
