Pawas, a scenic village and full of natural beauty is also Ratnagiri’s major spiritual place primarily due to a very long stay of Swami Swaroopanand ji, a follower of Warkari Sampraday. There is also a temple inside.
Duration of stay: A minimum of two day stay is recommended.
Things to do:
Visit 400 year old, Ganapatiphule temple, one of the eight significant ganapatis [Ashta Ganapatis] and do Pradakshina, 1 km long Ganapati-shaped walk way around the hill. Visit Ganpatiphule & Malgund beach and take boat rides and water sports are available at MTDC ganapatiphule complex. Ratnagiri- 20 km from Pawas and land of the ‘Hapus’ mangoes. Places of interest are Bhatye Beach, The Coconut Reasearch Centre, Bhagwati Bunder and the Seafood Processing Centre. Tilak Smarak [Ratnagiri] -house of Lokmanya Tilak, articles from the old newspapers are still preserved here. Other places - Ratnadurga Fort, Bhagivati Bandar [port], Patit Pawan Mandir [first temple built for non Brahmins] all driving distance from Pawas. Thebaw Palace[Ratnagiri], constructed in 1910-11 for the exiled king and queen of Burma (now Myanmar). They lived in this palace from 1911 till their death in 1916.
How to reach: Air: Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai - 370 km from Ratnagiri, further 20 km is Pawas. Rail: Ratnagiri railway station - 30 km from Pawas. Road: Ratnagiri - 20 km from Pawas. Connected by Volvo buses from Mumbai, Pune. State transport buses connects Pawas to Ratnagiri.
